Computed Radiography or Digital Radiography
Which is right for me?
IM3 CR7 (CR system)
Size 4 Sensor (DR system)
For years Computed Radiograph (CR) has been the first choice dental X-ray system for vets. While Digital Radiography (DR) has distinct advantages over CR systems, the limited availability of larger plate sizes used to be the main factor in choosing a CR system. The previous limitations of the small size 2 DR sensor meant that it could take more than 20 radiographs to image a whole dog’s mouth; In a big dog, a size 2 sensor will only fit part of a canine tooth on it.
With the production of the size 4 sensor the paradigm has shifted. DR sensors are the clear choice. Taking dental X-rays has never been easier.
DR systems do not require removing the X-ray plate from the patient’s mouth, so no assistance is required, and acquisition times are rapid. If an angle isn’t perfect? No problem, everything is right where you left it. You can make a minor adjustment and your perfect x-ray will be displayed 8 seconds later. DR systems also require substantially lower exposure times, resulting in less radiation risk for you and your patients. With the size 4 DR sensor this is particularly reduced as a patient receives the same exposure no matter the plate size used. Fewer images means less exposure.
The DR sensor is much more portable than any CR system. Along with a handheld X-ray generator, this could be shared between branches as required.
Recent technological advances have also driven down the costs of the DR technology to make it affordable to general practitioners.
There is still a place for the CR system in the veterinary sector, and the two can be used side by side. However, we feel passionately that DR is the optimum choice for the majority of vets. Ideally, you would have access to both a size 2 and size 4 DR sensor however, if this is not feasible, you can purchase either size sensor initially, knowing that adding the other size at a later date is possible.
